President Donald Trump Announces Historic September Gathering in Dallas as Republicans Highlight Policy Successes, Strengthen Election Momentum, and Celebrate the "Great American Comeback"
President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the Republican Party will host its first-ever midterm convention later this year, marking a historic departure from the party's traditional convention schedule to celebrate what he described as the achievements of the past two years.
The two-day event is scheduled to take place in Dallas on Sept. 9–10, Trump announced on Truth Social.
“We are going to celebrate the Great American Comeback, and the incredible successes of the American People who transformed our Country through the America First Agenda—no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, no tax on Social Security, stronger borders, safest ever communities, lower costs and real affordability, more jobs, American energy dominance, and so much more!” Trump wrote.
Trump first floated the idea of holding a midterm convention in August 2025 as a way to highlight his administration’s agenda ahead of the upcoming elections.
Political party conventions are traditionally held once every four years in the lead-up to a presidential election. Host cities are selected years in advance, with planning and preparations typically requiring significant time and coordination.
Such conventions generally bring together senior party leaders to outline the party’s platform while formally nominating and confirming candidates for president and vice president.
While Trump’s June 30 announcement did not provide additional details about the gathering, he described it as a “rally like none other!”
“America’s 250th Birthday is approaching, and together, we are building the foundation for the next 250 years of American Greatness,” Trump added. “The Golden Age of America has only just begun!”
The convention is intended to help boost voter turnout in key races that could determine whether Republicans retain control of Congress.
The Republican Mayors Association, led by Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson, welcomed the announcement, calling it a “tremendous honor.”
“I look forward to welcoming my fellow Republicans from across the United States to Dallas this September,” Johnson wrote on X. “As Chairman of the Republican Mayors Association, I’m confident that this unprecedented convention will energize our party, strengthen the conservative movement, and help build momentum for a successful 2026 election.”
The announcement comes one day after the Supreme Court struck down federal restrictions on how much a political party can spend in support of its own candidates.
The decision allows national party committees to channel unlimited amounts of money into individual campaigns in the months leading up to the November elections.
According to its latest monthly filing with the Federal Election Commission, the Republican National Committee (RNC) ended May with $125.5 million in cash on hand and no outstanding debt.
By comparison, the Democratic Party reported $14.9 million in cash while carrying $18.3 million in debt during the same reporting period.
Republican congressional campaign committees are also continuing to outpace their Democratic counterparts in fundraising.
