President Donald Trump has doubled down on his promise of a $5,000 payment to American adults, saying the plan will move forward even as questions remain over congressional approval, funding, eligibility, and its potential impact on inflation and the federal deficit.
President Donald Trump said his proposed $5,000 “Trump Dividend” for American adults “will happen,” reiterating his promise to deliver one of the largest direct cash-payment programs ever considered by the federal government.
“When I say something, I mean it!” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Friday. “The $5,000 Dividend will happen because the People of our Country deserve it.”
Trump further said Democrats had claimed that the “One Big, Beautiful Bill,” which he characterized as one of the largest bills ever approved by Congress and signed into law by a president, would be impossible to pass.
He also cited the $1,776 payment he said he provided to military personnel last year, arguing that many had initially viewed the payment as unlikely to happen. Trump said the money was ultimately delivered to military members, whom he said appreciated it.
Trump explained that the proposed dividend would be possible because of the country’s growth and economic success.
“The $5,000 Trump Dividend, given to all Adults in the United States due to the fact that our Country is taking in Trillions of Dollars of Economic Development, Investment, and Pure SUCCESS, is being criticized by ‘Dumocrats’ who are hoping that it never happens — But it will!” he said.
However, despite Trump’s declaration that the dividend “will happen,” the plan has not yet been fully authorized by Congress, and important questions remain about its financing, eligibility requirements, and timing.
Trump has suggested that the payment could be worth approximately $5,000 per eligible adult. With roughly 240 million adults in the United States, a payment of that size could cost the federal government approximately $1.2 trillion if every adult qualified.
Economists, budget analysts, and several lawmakers claim the proposal could spike inflation and worsen the country’s fiscal stability.
Another unresolved issue is who would receive the money. Trump has at times described the dividend as a broad payment to American adults, while Vice President JD Vance has indicated that higher-income Americans could potentially be excluded.
Congress would also play a critical role. A program involving direct federal payments would require legislation and funding authority, meaning the White House could not simply issue $5,000 checks without congressional action.
Trump’s proposal comes amid the upcoming midterm elections, in which Republicans are vying to retain majority control of both chambers of Congress.
“VOTE REPUBLICAN — MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump added on Truth Social.
Meanwhile, Democrats joked about Trump’s proposal, including Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.), who said: “If Democrats flip the House and Senate everyone will get a $10,000 dividend, and a pony, and free ice cream for life.”
Trump has previously made similar promises to provide dividend payments, including proposals to distribute revenue generated from tariffs and savings from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), but neither has yet come to fruition.
