The president and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani are set to meet Monday at Gracie Mansion to discuss issues facing the city and its residents, as their relationship evolves from campaign clashes to cordial exchanges.
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump will meet with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani when Trump travels to the city for the upcoming U.N. General Assembly.
The meeting is scheduled for Monday at Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the New York City mayor, according to Anna Bahr, Mamdani’s communications director.
Bahr said Trump and Mamdani will discuss issues affecting the city and New Yorkers. The White House confirmed that the meeting will take place but did not provide additional details.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist who defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary before winning the general election in November, has frequently been a political foil for Republicans.
Trump, however, has often struck a warmer tone toward Mamdani. Their first meeting following Mamdani’s election was notably cordial, with Trump saying at the White House that the then-mayor-elect would “surprise some conservative people.” During the 2025 campaign, Trump had called Mamdani a “100 percent Communist Lunatic.”
During a February meeting, Mamdani presented Trump with a mock New York Daily News front page bearing the headline, “Trump to City: Let’s Build.” The headline was a play on the newspaper’s famous 1975 front page, “FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD,” referring to President Gerald Ford’s promise to veto financial assistance to New York City.
Mamdani’s aides said at the time that the gesture was intended to show Trump the reaction and support that new federal investments in housing could generate in the city.
