U.S. President signals optimism after renewed negotiations with Tehran while warning intensified military action could resume if no agreement is reached
President Donald Trump said on May 6 that recent discussions with Iran had been productive and that it was “very possible” the two countries could reach an agreement to end the war.
“We’ve had some good talks before and all of sudden the next day ... they forgot what happened,” Trump told reporters. “Look, this is very simple, Iran can not have a nuclear weapon. ... And they won’t and they’ve agreed to that among other things.”
Trump also reiterated his warning that Iran could face renewed military strikes if negotiations fail to produce a deal.
“Assuming Iran agrees to give what has been agreed to, which is, perhaps, a big assumption, the already legendary Epic Fury will be at an end, and the highly effective Blockade will allow the Hormuz Strait to be OPEN TO ALL, including Iran,” Trump wrote in a May 6 post on Truth Social.
“If they don’t agree, the bombing starts, and it will be, sadly, at a much higher level and intensity than it was before,” he added.
Senior Israeli political officials told Epoch Magazine Israel that Jerusalem believes there are indications of progress in contacts involving Trump and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
However, the Israeli officials cautioned that internal divisions within Iran’s leadership continue to pose a threat to the prospects of securing a lasting agreement.
