President revisits long-standing criticism of communist ideology, citing historical destruction and failed promises during White House press conference

During an Oval Office press conference on Thursday, President Donald Trump responded to a question from Iris Tao, White House correspondent for NTD Television, regarding his recent social media posts criticizing communism.

On Wednesday, Trump posted on Truth Social that communist movements often gain early public support, but their policies ultimately result in poverty and instability.

“Remember, breathtaking ‘Popularity’ first, and then, guaranteed DEATH AND DESTRUCTION!” Trump wrote.

In a separate post, he added: “Has anyone ever seen a happy communist?”

The exchange became personal when Tao, whose family fled a communist regime, told Trump that his posts were “certainly very meaningful to some Americans.” At Trump’s request, she read the social media message aloud to members of the press corps.

Expanding on his remarks, Trump warned about what he described as the false promises offered by communist governments.

“You're going to get free rent, you're going to get free houses, you're going to get free food, you're going to get free everything,” he said.

“But eventually, that ends. And it leads to death, destruction, and squalor 100 percent of the time.”

The latest remarks continue Trump’s long-standing criticism of communism and socialism. In November 2025, he officially designated Nov. 2 through Nov. 8, 2025, as “Anti-Communism Week” to commemorate an estimated 100 million victims who lost their lives under communist political systems.

In an official White House proclamation, Trump described “Anti-Communism Week” as “a solemn remembrance of the devastation caused by one of history's most destructive ideologies.”

He further stated in the proclamation: “For more than a century, communism has brought nothing but ruin. Wherever it spreads, it silences dissent, punishes beliefs, and demands that generations kneel before the power of the state instead of standing for freedom. Its story is written in blood and sorrow, a grim reminder that communism is nothing more than another word for servitude.”

The ideological position echoes rhetoric from Trump’s first term, when he frequently warned against far-left forms of governance.

Addressing world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in September 2017, Trump said: “From the Soviet Union to Cuba to Venezuela, wherever true socialism or communism has been adopted, it has delivered anguish and devastation and failure.”

“Those who preach the tenets of these discredited ideologies only contribute to the continued suffering of the people who live under these cruel systems,” he added.
