In first public appearance since latest attack, former president underscores tax cuts and Social Security protections while addressing security concerns at major retirement community

President Donald Trump rallied supporters in a Republican stronghold in Florida on Friday, emphasizing his efforts to protect Social Security and Medicaid in his first public appearance since surviving another assassination attempt.

Ahead of his visit to The Villages—one of the largest retirement communities in the United States known for backing Republican candidates—Trump was asked whether he felt safe attending a public event following the recent shooting.

“I don’t even think about it, Peter,” Trump said, responding to a question from Peter Doocey.

A day earlier, Trump faced questions about enhanced security measures, including whether he would consider wearing a bulletproof vest. He said he was unsure if he could “handle looking 20 pounds heavier” when asked about the idea after the foiled attempt on his life at the Washington Hilton. The shooting, which occurred during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, marked the third assassination attempt against him in less than two years.

Security arrangements were heavily scrutinized during his Florida visit.

In his speech, Trump outlined policies aimed at prioritizing seniors and workers, including proposals such as eliminating taxes on tips and Social Security benefits.

“Thanks to this massive tax cut, American seniors just received your largest tax refunds of all time,” he told supporters.

Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) introduced a new tax deduction for Americans aged 65 and older beginning in the 2025 tax year, providing up to $6,000 for single filers and $12,000 for married couples.

According to the White House, 30 million seniors claimed the enhanced deduction during the most recent tax season. Trump described it as the largest tax break in U.S. history for seniors, aimed at helping them retain more of their Social Security income.

“That means more money to visit your grandkids, a bigger budget for taking a trip,” he said.

Representative Greg Steube highlighted the importance of the policies for his state ahead of the event.

“Florida’s Suncoast has one of the largest retiree populations in America,” Steube wrote on X. “My constituents have spent decades working and saving. They deserve policies that protect and strengthen what they’ve earned.”

During his remarks, Trump also announced that $13 billion has been distributed to 2.5 million seniors in Florida as a result of the tax cuts.
